Passive Infrared Systems (PIR)

Passive infrared security systems use infrared light either to detect movement or temperature changes in the sensor's viewing area. They compare the temperature of the background with that of anything moving across that background zone.

PIR systems allow a person to view a poorly lit area via security cameras with infrared light sensors. Passive infrared systems don't emit anything, instead they see any infrared energy which is emitted by people and motors.

Since most burglars prefer the cover of darkness, infrared cameras can be very beneficial in back yards or for use with night security cameras as a perimeter or early warning system. Since infrared sensors also sense temperature, an object, a person, warm car engine, or even a smoldering fire can trip an infrared sensor-based alarm.

Infrared security systems are used in outdoor motion detecting systems, indoor motion detection and in fire alarms. Their versatility makes them a popular choice for home security systems.
